I’m Addicted to Sugar

IMG_5316My name is Anne and I am addicted to sugar.  I feel the need to consume some sort of sweet treat after each meal.  Sometimes the sweet treat is my meal.  For example, I’ll make a banana, zucchini or pumpkin bread slice it up, put it in the freezer and grab a slice for breakfast as I’m on my way out the door.  It’s definitely not a good habit to start off most of your days with a pastry.  The only hope I have of not eating a sugar laced treat after a meal is if I don’t pack one in my lunch and I have the willpower to say no to any treats that may be offered to me throughout the workday.  Curse the lunchroom where I work because there are often sweets laying around for the taking. Let’s not forget that treats that are brought to school for students’ birthdays all the time too. Sugar is everywhere people and it’s up to me to say no.

There have been a couple times in the past when I have gone cold turkey and given up sweets for a few weeks.  It was a struggle for about the first week or two.  I was always thinking about how I couldn’t eat sugar and how I really wanted to eat sugar.   Always.  Then it became a little easier to pass up the temptations.  I’d eventually fall out of my new habit when I allowed myself a little something.  I am an all or nothing girl.  A little bit turned into a little bit more and then back into my original problem.  I have decided that I need to get back on the wagon.

This time I have two victims people who have been forced chosen to join me in my Cut Out the Excess Sugar Challenge 2013.  My friend/neighbor/running partner, Monika, and my husband, Adam, will also be struggling to make the change.  We are going to be each other’s support.

I know that I have a problem.  And I know I need to do something about it.  That’s the first step right?! It’s lame, but our start date is not until after the holidays.  I need to get through Christmas and a trip to Disney World before I can make this huge change. Wish us luck.

Anyone else want to join me in my Cut Out the Excess Sugar Challenge 2013?

    Good luck!

Good luck with your challenge, I should probably eat less sugar, especially before bedtime as it keeps me awake!

  3. I just made a deal with a friend of mine to not eat dessert for a year, other than when visiting new countries. I look forward to hearing about how your challenge goes and using it to feel inspired for mine 🙂

oh I’m totally in – I’m going back on the Paleo Diet – NO CARBS at all for a month in January. I lost 10lbs in October when I did it but DEF need to pig out over Xmas

    • Anne says:

RIght! I definitely need to pig out at Christmas and over my Disney vacation. Hey about the Paleo diet, after you stopped it did you gain the weight back or were you able to keep it off?

        I’m too scared to check.
I believe 100% in the science though, if you consume foods that spike your blood sugar levels, your body holds on to, and creates fat. So if we’re eating ANY kind of sugar or carbs, it’s gonna happen.

OMG I suffer from the same addiction! Lol! It is so hard to go cold turkey. I’ve tried to eat more fruit hoping to curb my cravings but it only works for so long. I’ll have to try this 2013 challenge but it won’t be easy. I’ll have to stay away from Disneyland next year. Tigger-tails are my weakness! :p

I am eating chocolate as I am reading this… and I am ready to cry… what did I sign myself up to? This will be one crazy fight! You might as well expect midnight phone calls as I am about to consume something sweet – I have you on my speed dial 😉

Hi Anne – Thank you for bringing on this challenge. I have decided to do 2013 without refined sugar and white flour. Seems like you are a great runner – I have done a couple 5k runs – very, very slowly mind you. I would love to get my time down a bit. My 10 year old can do a 5k in 27 minutes – I would love to do one in under 35! Anyway – I know I can do this year without refined sugar and white flour (won’t be easy!) – and I am glad that I seem to have found a kindred spirit. I agree that Disney would be hard – especially those mouse ear ice creams! Thanks Anne – hope you’ve had some great holidays.

I am cutting out added sugar and sugar substitutes in 2013! My husband is doing it too, to support me! Where do I sign up?
